There are many reasons for the water dispenser in a kitchen refrigerator to not work. Again, some of the reasons are going to sound a little strange. However, something as obvious as an on/off switch has been the culprit before. Be sure to review the obvious potential issues before proceeding with refrigerator repair. Let’s start to cover this appliance repair issue and see what reasons we can reference for a broken water dispenser on a refrigerator.
The reason for a water dispenser not dispensing is typically an installation problem, a filter failure or frozen water lines:
You just bought a new refrigerator for your kitchen with a water dispenser, but it’s not working. The water dispenser must be hooked up to the water line. That might be the issue.
If your brand new refrigerator is replacing a previous refrigerator that did not include an ice maker or water dispenser, there is a possibility that you do not have a water line near this area of the kitchen. Most of the time a water line is commonly run from under the home either in a basement or crawl space. You can get this line at almost any hardware store and they are pretty simple for the average homeowner to install. Usually they have come with a built-in water shut-off valve, which is necessary so that if you should need to relocate the refrigerator, you can shut off the water.
If there is an attached water line, is the valve on? The valve handle needs to be in line with the hose. And, is there water running through the pipe you have used to connect the water line? Simple and basic questions, but things that need to be confirmed.
If you had to remove the refrigerator doors during installation the water dispenser is not plugged in. Read the owner’s manual to find the wire harness for that particular refrigerator. Be sure that it’s plugged into the refrigerator.
When the water line is connected, most of the time there is air in it. So, lifting and lowering the dispenser lever to get the air out of it is necessary.
Filter Problems
On some of the popular refrigerators, there are different filters. These filters can “expire”, become clogged or freeze. All of the filters are dependent on the style and brand of refrigerator. If your filter is clogged it might cause slow filling or no flowing. It’s suggested that your filter is changed every 6 months. Changing filters can be hard sometimes. If you run into problems, go online or call us and learn the right process to change a filter.
One suggestion is to fill up the filter with water before installing it. Typically the water filters take a long time to fill, which could lead you to assume that the water dispenser isn’t working. You should read the owner’s manual if all else fails. To ensure it is not air trapped in the water lines, we recommend to depress the dispenser arm for about 5 minutes.
A frozen water tank might also be the source of the problem as well in some models. If the tank freezes it will start to leak onto the fresh food bins. Limited food inside of the fresh food bins might cause freezing.
